Cervical cancer is one of the few types of cancer that we can almost entirely prevent through regular checkups. However, many women feel confused when they hear terms like Pap smear and HPV test. While both tests are done during a quick pelvic examination and involve taking a small sample from the cervix, they look for different things to keep you safe.
A Pap smear is essentially a cell check. During this test, a specialist looks at the cells from your cervix under a microscope to see if they look normal. The goal is to find any abnormal cells before they have a chance to turn into cancer. If these changes are caught early, they can be treated easily.
On the other hand, an HPV test is a virus check. It looks specifically for the Human Papillomavirus, which is the virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer. By finding the virus early, doctors can monitor you more closely even before any cell changes actually happen.
Knowing which test you need depends primarily on your age. Medical guidelines recommend that women begin screening at age 21. If you are between the ages of 21 and 29, you should have a Pap smear every three years. At this younger age, the HPV test is usually not recommended because the body often clears the virus on its own. Once you reach age 30, the options change because the risk of a persistent virus increases. From age 30 up until age 65, you can choose to have just an HPV test every five years, a Pap smear every three years, or both tests together every five years. This combined approach, often called co-testing, provides the most thorough level of protection. After age 65, most women can stop screening if their previous results have been consistently normal.
