Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs but can also spread to other parts of the body. Despite being both preventable and curable, it remains a significant global health concern.
What is Tuberculosis?
TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a bacterium that spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. The infection can be either latent (inactive and non-contagious) or active (contagious and requiring immediate treatment).
Symptoms of Tuberculosis
The symptoms vary depending on whether the infection affects the lungs (Pulmonary TB) or other organs (Extrapulmonary TB).
Pulmonary TB Symptoms:
- Persistent cough lasting more than three weeks
- Coughing up blood or phlegm
- Chest pain
- Fever and night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss and fatigue
Extrapulmonary TB Symptoms:
When TB spreads beyond the lungs, it can affect organs such as the kidneys, bones, brain, or lymph nodes, causing symptoms such as:
- Swollen lymph nodes (especially in the neck)
- Back or joint pain
- Confusion or seizures (if TB affects the brain)
How is TB Transmitted?
TB spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. However, brief casual contact is usually not enough to contract TB—prolonged exposure is required. Importantly, latent TB does not spread.
Who is at Risk?
Certain individuals have a higher risk of developing TB, including:
- People with weakened immune systems (e.g., those living with HIV/AIDS)
- Individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes
- Malnourished individuals
- Smokers and drug users
- Those living in crowded or unsanitary conditions
Prevention and Treatment
TB can be prevented through early detection, vaccination (BCG vaccine), and proper hygiene practices. If diagnosed, treatment typically involves a combination of antibiotics taken over several months.
When to Seek Medical Help
If you or someone you know experiences persistent TB symptoms such as a prolonged cough, chest pain, fever, or night sweats, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional immediately.
